Ok... just went to Orlando to the AOA meeting. My Moto Droid got a solid workout during the day. It's really not that bad on batteries, but I did have to top off the charge once during the day. It bugs me to have to do that. In addition, I wanted to be able to use my Droid as an eBook reader on the plane, listen to a few podcasts, etc... but I avoid doing that to conserve the battery. So I did some research and, today I ordered a Tekkeon TekCharge MP1800. It's a portable, external battery pack that allows you to charge/use your cell phone or other small device for hours. I picked it up for $35 on Amazon, and even got free 2-day shipping using my Amazon Prime account. Tekkeon makes a line of portable power supplies... some capably of running laptops for many hours. None of the products are very expensive. You can learn more at http://www.tekkeon.com. Here's the link to their product line PDF: http://tekkeon.com/downloads/tek_mobilePower.pdf

Is Optometry Still Worth Recommending? PDF Print E-mail

There's a not of talk on the Optcomlist this week about whether or not Listees would still recommend Optometry to their own kids, or other young people who ask about the profession. Most would not, yes, would not, recommend it. I'm a little surprised... well, maybe not. I still think that Optometry has much to offer anyone who's willing to be a bit different... specialize... accept a unique practice setting... do the tough stuff no one else wants to do. How do you feel about it? Register at Optcom.com and take the poll I've just put up regarding just this topic. Better yet, join the List and get involved in the thread.

The Ocular Nutrition Society has a new name, and a new web site. Looks pretty similar to the old one, but the system has changed underneath substantially. There's a new forum system, and plenty of white papers and abstracts to check out. New URL is: http://www.ocularnutritionsociety.org

I've installed a new photo gallery system on Optcom.com. This system makes it easy to upload images, both clinical and non-clinical. There's even a "Rogues' Gallery" where Optcommers have started uploading their headshots. Some are scarier than others!

The CD's are available! I've created a jukebox with which you can sample the first 15 minutes of every course. Check it out at: http://secointernational.info/cms/

These disks contain easy-to-use MP3's that can be transferred to your iPod, Zune, USB key, etc.

You'll also find a link to the order page when you're ready to buy.

Sounds like it means nothing... but SECO will be moving to the newer Hall "C" in the Georgia World Congress Center. For the first time since SECO has made the GWCC their home, virtually all classrooms and the exhibit hall will be on the same floor. It's a gorgeous facility and will help SECO make yet another jump up in quality.

I'm pretty convinced at this point in my career that having patients use Ocusoft or Steri-lid foam beats the older-style wipes, and/or baby shampoo. Compliance seems better, and patients actually come back thanking me for giving them something that really helps. Now I'm trying to get the Ophthalmologists I work with more committed to using them, as well.
