IOP and glaucoma: What really matters?

The relationship between glaucoma and IOP is complex. Once a required characteristic of the disease, elevated IOP is no longer considered to be a part of the definition of glaucoma. IOP has been demoted to risk factor status, but an extremely important risk factor: It is the only modifiable risk factor, and lowering IOP is the only established treatment for glaucoma. Given its critical importance in disease management, an international group of experts at the World Ophthalmology Congress in Abu Dhabi met to discuss the issues that do and do not matter when lowering IOP.
